Lab 3 - Design Your Team's "Flag"

The primary purpose of this lab is to continue working on your team's flag for the capture the flag contest. You will have one more lab period after this week to work on the setup, plus any time outside of class that 315 is open. The midterm is in two weeks and the contest will begin in three weeks.

In addition, I want to provide you with some resources for your research projects. Computer Science is a fast-moving area, so the majority of relevant research will be from conference proceedings and journals rather than books. The three main conference organizing groups are ACM, Usenix and IEEE. There are other security related conferences as well, such as Blackhat or CanSecWest.

The campus has a campus subscription to ACM Digital Library and Usenix provides its conference proceedings (and often also video of presentations) online. We do not have a subscription to IEEE proceedings on campus, but if there is a specific article that you wish to use, you can ask the library to request it for you.

You should not use sources like Wikipedia as a primary reference, although you can use them to find other papers, whitepapers and websites to reference. Likewise, blogs should not be used as a primary reference, but can be used to find other references. When looking at research papers, also pay special attention to the References and Prior Work sections, as this can point towards other important or interesting papers on the topic.

Make sure to have your group check in with me to get credit for today's lab.
