KIE, San Joaquin Community Hospital, Kern Schools Credit Union Are Proud to Present

The 28th Annual Charles W. Kegley Memorial Lecture

Sowing the Seeds of Justice

The Central Valley 75 Years after Grapes of Wrath

Former California Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso

As part of KIE's contribution to CSUB's year-long celebration of the 75th anniversary of John Steinbeck's classic, The Grapes of Wrath, we are very proud to present Justice Cruz Reynoso, whose personal history exemplifies the struggles faced by so many who have walked in the Joad's footsteps. In his case, those struggles took him from poverty and toiling in the fields to sitting on the bench of the state's highest court.

Justice Reynoso, now in his 80's, continues to fight for justice for all California citizens. See, for example, his recent challenge to the Obama Administration's Justice Department to review whether LA County's electoral boundaries violate the Voting Rights Act (see LA Voting Story). Justice Reynoso was also the subject of the 2010 award-winning documentary, "Cruz Reynoso: Sowing the Seeds of Justice," produced by Abby Ginzberg (see the trailer here).

Like all KIE events, the lecture is free and open to the public, thanks to generous support from Kern Schools Federal Credit Union and San Joaquin Community Hospital. For additional information call the Institute at 661-654-3149.

In order to live and thrive, culture needs a critical space, a forum for people to reach out to one another.... University spaces are essential as spaces for reflection, research and critical thinking-- the structures that we must establish to fight intolerance, lies, and violence. -- Carlos Fuentes (6th Annual KIE Fall Lecture), This I Believe: An A to Z of a Life
